YORKSHIRE CRICKET AUTHORS AT LIT FEST

Both Stuart Rayner (The War of the White Roses) and John Fuller (All Wickets Great and Small) are set to appear in an all-star bill at the Bradford Literary Festival in July.

The Cricketer magazine are running three events at the festival on Saturday July 1st. John and Stuart are appearing with author/playwright Anthony Clavane at an event entitled ‘Yorkshire, the cricket county: an exploration’.

  • How much are Yorkshiremen inspired by the legacy of the greats? Trueman, Close, Boycott, Illingworth, Bird – geniuses, tacticians, curmudgeons, eccentrics.
  • Strong Yorkshire, strong England – discuss.
  • Does the particular psyche of the Yorkshireman play a part in their love of the game?
  • Trouble and strife – is Yorkshire the insular county? No ‘outsiders’ before 1992 yet loving civil war (Boycott v the committee).

On the same day, Rob Bagchi, Duncan Hamilton and Boyd Tonkin consider ‘Cricket: Empire’s greatest export?’

Meanwhile, Stuart recently enjoyed a very successful event as guest of the Cricket Society in London.

“A fantastic finish to our winter programme on Tuesday 21st March,” reports cricketsociety.com. “Stuart Rayner, a journalist based in the north east, gave us a wonderful account of the writing of his book The War of The White Roses. Inevitably this focused on one Geoffrey Boycott who Stuart had interviewed extensively. Afterwards in the Q&A session Stuart gave us his views on Durham and the relegation and points deduction saga.”

Here is Stuart pictured with the Cricket Society’s Douglas Miller, who comically remarked, "Cricket writers are looking much younger these days!"
