GLYN RHODES BOOK LAUNCH SOLD OUT

Renowned title-winning boxing trainer and manager Glyn Rhodes MBE will have a full house for his book launch at Sheffield’s Niagara Conference Centre on Sunday 23 October.

A much-loved and respected figure, Rhodes earned his MBE by transforming countless lives as a mentor and boxing coach, and as a pro trainer has handled the likes of Clinton Woods, Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham and Richie Wenton. In his own fighting career, Glyn was a member of the iconic Brendan Ingle stable during its illustrious 80s and 90s heyday.

Initially, 170 tickets for the event went on sale, but due to demand the seating capacity was upped to 220. When those tickets sold out, the organisers agreed to provide 40 standing tickets, which were quickly snapped up as well. This means that 260 paying guests will be at the launch.

As well as attaining a personally signed copy of Rhodes’ autobiography, attendees can enjoy a Q&A with Glyn and his co-author, William Hill Sports Book of the Year-nominated writer Mark Turley, and hear speeches from other special guests.

About the Book

Glyn Rhodes MBE has devoted his life to boxing. Since wandering into the world-famous St Thomas’ gym in Sheffield as a directionless teenager, he has spent more than 40 years working inside and outside the ropes. Cognisant of how this hardest of sports both saved and brutalised him, he is now ready to tell his story.

Rhodes’ reflections offer fresh perspectives on a number of well-known British boxing figures. Alongside his complicated relationship with the iconic Brendan Ingle, he provides previously unpublished details on Naseem Hamed, Johnny Nelson, Herol Graham, Clinton Woods, the British Boxing Board of Control and much more besides.

He reveals how boxing lifted him from his childhood on Sheffield council estates to royal appointments and financial security. Yet in the end, the sport that gave him so much nearly broke him, causing him to seek psychiatric help.

Ultimately, Rhodes’ perspective provides a new angle on an old debate. As boxing continues to attract both support and condemnation, his story shows how the sport’s defenders and detractors suffer the same delusion. You cannot truly love or hate boxing, because it is such different things, at different times, to different people.

Beyond Good and Evil is a brutally honest appraisal of boxing, from a man who has devoted his life to it, as a fighter and a trainer. The sport saved Glyn Rhodes MBE, then nearly drove him mad. Read and you will discover:

  • How his complicated relationship with iconic trainer Brendan Ingle shaped his career
  • His previously unheard reflections on famous boxing figures such as Herol Graham, Johnny Nelson, Naseem Hamed and others
  • How his behaviour in the ring earned him the nickname 'showboat'
  • Stories of working outside the ropes in many British, European and world title fights
  • The devastation he felt at being closely involved in four boxing tragedies, the last of which prompted him to undergo a course of psychotherapy
  • How his passion for training disadvantaged youngsters led to royal recognition
