A Gem Among the Endless Stream of Footballer Biographies

Amidst the usual pre-Christmas flurry The Sergio Torres Story has been described by one reader as a "gem among the endless stream of footballer biographies".

Torres’s story, which has also won plaudits from the UK's sports media for its uniqueness, is one of of willpower, sacrifice and joy, and of daring to dream.

Quitting a brick factory in Mar del Plata, Argentina, at 22 years of age, with 300 dollars in his pocket, Sergio travelled to England with the dream of becoming a professional footballer.

Three years later, he was playing against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, effortlessly beating superstar Michael Ballack by lifting the ball over his head – a trick he then repeats against Didier Drogba.

A dream, surely? An impossibility. But a few years later, he's back again, this time up against Wayne Rooney at a packed Old Trafford – the Theatre of Dreams.

It’s an incredible journey of Wycombe Wanderers, Peterborough United and Crawley Town midfielder Torres and shows that reality can be stranger than fiction.

The BBC Football League Show and Radio 5Live reporter Mark Clemmit says "It is as colourful a life as his Chelsea namesake, The Sergio Torres Story has more than a touch of Roy of the Rovers."

His BBC colleague Dan Walker, of Football Focus, describes it as “A great book,” while Everton manager Roberto Martinez also praised it during an interview on Radio 5Live.

He said, "Sergio's story is inspirational and I have huge respect for what he has done. He has been a real success and it shows that when you have a dream you will do anything to achieve it."
